I work at company that has a gym and a basketball court on site. It’s pretty freaking awesome. Every Tuesday and Thursday a group of us guys (and I say guys because not a single girl has come out to play in the last 3 years; where you at ladies?) play pickup basketball at lunch time. I would have to say that our lunch time crew is pretty close to a garage sale of basketball players. We have guys as young as 23 and as old as 50. We have guys that have 5% body fat, and guys that are just fat. We have guys that played high school basketball and we have guys who probably couldn’t make a junior high team.
The routine is pretty simple; games start at approximately noon but people start showing up at 11:45. It’s always a race to be one of the first 10 players and get on the first game of the day. It’s pretty entertaining watching grown men trying to beat each other to the court to avoid being number 11. They come out of the locker room racing each other and sometimes they don’t even go to the locker room and cheat by changing on the court.
Once the game starts there is a plenty of banter and trash talking as well as hard fouls, bad and ugly shots, turnovers, not much scoring and lots of ugly basketball. Pretty much what would be expected from a bunch of old and out of shape engineers. I usually leave a lunch time basketball session with some kind of bruise, scratch, or minor injury. This may not sound like much fun, but it’s probably my favorite part of the day since it makes me feel like a kid playing basketball during recess. Tuesdays and Thursdays are my favorite days at work.
